A full refund at the point of purchase has been offered to those who bought tickets for MCR’s February 25 performance at the Big Top, Luna Park. Soundwave organizers have lined up emo-rock band Jimmy Eat World in their place instead. The band is set to join the likes of Motion City Soundtrack, RX Rabbits, Sunny Day Real Estate and Glassjaw for the festival.

According to their press release, MCR front man Gerard Way has been sidelined by “severe vocal problems” and was “advised by doctors to get treatment”.

The band released its own statement as well, saying, “We are really sorry that we’ve had to cancel this tour, and apologise for any inconvenience it has caused. The last thing we ever want to do is cancel shows, but we’ll be back to Australia to make it up to the fans as soon as possible.”

The band was once described as an “emo” band, although Way publically rejected the description, calling the emo genre “… garbage”. The band considers the music it plays to be simply termed “rock”, or “violent, dangerous pop”.

We had mentioned a few weeks back that we’d be seeing several big-name bands appear at the SHOP Yoga Studio, the location of the Tweet House. This was based on information provided to us by an event promoter who had contracted to use our space in the evenings. The agreement they signed stated that our attendees would be granted passes to the concerts they were booking.

We had been provided with copies of agreements made with the band’s talent agencies, and had been cc’d on emails with band managers, etc. In addition, one of our teammates had a face-to-face conversation with at least one of the contracted musicians who said they had anticipated seeing us all in Park City.

Regrettably, the promoter who had made these contractual commitments was unable to meet his scheduled financial obligations to the musicians. The result was those contacts lapsed, and the bands are now no longer scheduled to appear.

We are still trying to decipher what actually happened and why, and are digging for more information. We will inform our partners as more specifics become clear.

As a result, the Tweet House has been extended to the evenings on both Saturday and Sunday. The insanely good DJ Menelik will be spinning in the evenings, Mike Relm will be performing live on Sunday at the Hitachi Cocktail Reception, and we’re poised to announce fantastic parties on both Saturday and Sunday night.

The New Jersey lads have announced they will play a blistering one-club show at Sydney’s Luna Park Big Top on Thursday February 25 off the back of their Soundwave festival dates in 2010.

But don’t don your best black mourning gear just yet. The band, whose dark lyrical imagery and megawatt pop-punk riffs have struck a chord with a generation of disenfranchised youth (amounting to platinum sales for their last album ‘The Black Parade’), are going over to the dark side – which for emo-inflected bands means a switch to themes like “strength” and “self-preservation”.

According to lead singer Gerard Way, it’s a move that in part stemmed from reports of black-clad kids getting the bash when the band played at ‘Big Day Out’ in 2007.

“It literally didn’t make any sense to me,” the MCR singer said to the Daily Telegraph. “It all boils down to macho versus emotional at the end of the day. It comes down to guttural, violent tendencies versus talking about your problems.”

“I always felt there was a great deal of black humour with anything we were doing. But I did feel it was misperceived and misinterpreted, and in really strange ways. That’s the thing though, when you put a song out there, it’s no longer yours, it’s somebody else’s, and it’s theirs to interpret however they want.

“But I knew the power the band had was whatever we put out next, so we could dictate what we were saying, we could dictate how it’s perceived to a point.”

Aussie fans will be among the first to hear the new songs from MCR’s hotly anticipated fourth album due in 2010, which Gerard vows will be “very explicitly saying that we’re all not victims”.

Don’t expect to see the lads clad in pastel pink any time soon, but do get ready for MCR to show a new side of their stripped back souls. And we can’t wait! Tickets go on sale Friday November 20 at 9am (AEDT).

After enduring months of forum squabbling, bets and revelations, it is with equal parts excitement and relief that we finally bring you the official first line-up for Soundwave 2010.

Announcing their reformation in early 2009, it has only been two months since Faith No More made their triumphant return to the stage at the Brixton Academy in London. After weeks of mumblings and a few hints from Mike Paton himself, it is with much excitement (and a little bit of wee in our pants) that we confirm the alternative metal legends as the headliners for Soundwave 2010.

It has been over two years since Gerard Way brought his Black Parade downunder, so it comes as no surprise that My Chemical Romance will be returning to Australia to head-up the wave of sound in 2010. Making just as much noise and wearing slightly more make-up at next year’s Soundwave will be the ever intriguing Davey Havok and AFI.

The big names keep coming with Finnish rockers HIM, Jesse Hughes’ Eagles Of Death Metal and post-hardcore punks Alexisonfire all set to ride the wave in February. And last but definitely not least, with septic elbows long behind them, Jane’s Addiction, we finally make their long-awaited return to Australia as part of Soundwave 2010.

Now, with the evening and severe jetlag setting in, and after observing some splashes of local talent, it was time to prepare for the evening’s headline set in the main Chiba Marine baseball arena. Three enormous letters were billboarding the back of the stage, white on black: M, C, R.

As we had artist passes and it was raining we asked backstage if there was any sneaky back-route to the main arena. Through some garbled non-communication/sign-language to several backstage staff that mainly involved gesturing to our wristbands, me and my companion ended up in the back of our own personal shuttle bus headed round the back of the stadium away from the crowds. “Wouldn’t it be funny,” we joked. “If we stepped outside and Gerard was waiting their for us, and the bouncers were ushering us onto stage.” Well, we didn’t get ushered onto the stage, but, Gerard was there, doing his hair, and the bouncers certainly didn’t stop us going on stage.

Here’s what followed:

I guess the whole Black Parade-era costume and theatrics is long-forgotten now, but the showtune-esque pomp powered them through a set of oldies, not so oldies and a couple of brand-spankers. Including this one called ‘Death Before Disco’. It’s an urgent jet-stream of head-back punk’n'roll, more in line with their take on Dylan’s ‘Desolation Row’ than the cabaret of the last album.

I’m not sure what the safety/distance regulations are on pyrotechnics, what with innocent stragglers wandering about stage’n'all, but considering the fact that no one within a three metre radius of us left the stage with any eyelashes or eyebrows, I think they may have been exceeded.

I think moments like this are what invented the term ‘stemo’ (= stadium emo).

For the encore the band went offstage, only for Gerard to miraculously appear David Copperfield-style on a massive riser in the middle of the stadium for a shmaltzy keyboard serenade. You can see drummer Bob Bryar stumbling around in front of us…

This would have been a really cute gesture if the translator working with the band hadn’t ‘accidently’ given them the symbols for “eyeliner’s for girls!’
