Gerard Way Talks New Comic “Fabulous Killjoys,” Next My Chemical Romance Album

“I like the titles from The Umbrella Academy issues better than my song titles now,” Gerard Way announced at his Saturday afternoon panel at Comic-Con International. “They’ve leveled up. There’s nothing better than titling an issue of Umbrella Academy.” The frontman of My Chemical Romance, Way is also a longtime comics fan — he mentioned that he’d freaked out about seeing Jeff (Bone) Smith the night before, and rhapsodized over Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead (“After The Walking Dead, I don’t know that you can touch zombies. It’ll be a good five or 10 years before somebody else can do a zombie comic”).

Of course, Way has also become an award-winning comics writer himself in the last few years. At the overflowing panel that’s now an annual Comic-Con tradition, he announced two new comic books he’s working on: the third Umbrella Academy miniseries, subtitled Hotel Oblivion and drawn by the Brazilian artist Gabriel Bá, and a new series called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, drawn by Becky Cloonan (Demo). Way talked to Rolling Stone about the new comics, as well as the MCR record that’s in progress right now.

CCI: Gerard Way Part 2: “Killjoys”

The Dark Horse panel at Comic-Con International featured the announcement of a second comic book series for My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way, who has already made a name for himself in comics with the Eisner Award-winning “Umbrella Academy.” Way’s new series, co-written by Shaun Simon and illustrated by Becky Cloonan, will be called “Killjoys” and debut sometime in 2010. Beyond that, details are scarce, but CBR did get some interesting info from Way in the second part of our Comic-Con interview.

“One of the cool things about ‘Umbrella Academy’ was it kind of got a fair shot as soon as it came out in that, nobody knew what to expect,” Way said. “I kind of like that, I don’t want to give everything away about ‘Killjoys,’ I want to give it a fair shot.”

SDCC 09: Dark Horse & Gerard Way Loves Comics Too!

Gerard Way was the surprise guest at the Dark Horse: We Love Comics Too! panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Saturday, and announced a new comic called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

The panel included DH Managing Editor Scott Allie, Publisher Mike Richardson and Public Relations Director Jeremy Atkins, who introduced other creators and representatives in the audience as their projects were announced.

Gerard Way, lead singer of My Chemical Romance and writer of the Eisner Award winning The Umbrella Academy, announced a new series he’d be writing called The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

Way will work with co-writer Shaun Simon and artist Becky Cloonan (DEMO, PIXU0 on the comic, which is completely unrelated to Umbrella Academy. The Killjoys book will be a mature readers title set in the ’90s in modern America.

“It’s simply about a guy who wants his Ramones records back,” Way said to laughs from the audience. “It deals with so many things.”

Way said that, in search of his Ramones records, the character goes on a “violent six-issue odyssey.”
