Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s comic book, The Umbrella Academy was recently optioned for a feature film. Way spoke with MTV about the prospect, as well as how it is already coming together:
We really truly hadn’t anticipated ['Apocalypse Suite'] to be so well-received and get so much attention,’ said Way, ‘So that obviously kind of raised the stakes, [and] not in a negative way. If anything, it’s forced us to go even further to not pay attention to what people think about it or what they’re going to think about it.
They want me really involved, which is flattering. So I’m going to be as involved as I can, while at the same time relinquishing control of the stuff. I’d like to be available to them but at the end of the day I’m not going to tell them how to do their job.
One rumour is that Diablo Cody (‘Juno’) may be writing the script,
Punknews.org has reviewed two sets of the series, The Umbrella Academy: Vol. 4 [comic] and The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite.

Universal Pictures is putting a film adaptation of the awesome Dark Horse comic book The Umbrella Academy on the fast-track. The comic book was created and written by Gerard Way with art by Eisner winner Gabriel Ba.
According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, ‘The studio is fast-tracking The Umbrella Academy (about a group of 7 children born with mutant superpowers) after just pinning down its deal with Gerard Way and Dark Horse owner Mike Richardson, the comic book store owner who started the comics company in 1986. Scott Stuber will be producing what Universal insiders praise as a ‘cool and sexy’ project.’
Way, the lead singer for My Chemical Romance, received critical and popular acclaim for 2006’s The Black Parade and is currently prepping the end credits track of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. The Umbrella Academy won an Eisner Award for a best limited series this past summer at Comic-Con.
According to Nikki FInke’s site, there will be a continuing ‘Umbrella’mini-series and Way has said he ‘definitely wants to have storylines that evolve and even conclude, rather than remain ongoing like most superhero titles.’
Under the tutelage of their guardian and mentor, Dr. Reginald Hargreeves, its members spent their childhoods fighting evil and honing their extraordinary gifts. Until something went terribly wrong. Now, nine years later, the estranged members of the Umbrella Academy are reunited by the death of the only parent they’ve ever known and the rise of a new and terrible threat. Will they be able to overcome their history for long enough to save the world-one more time?’
For those who are curious, issue #1 of the second series just hit the shelves this week. And check out My Chemical Romance HERE. For more Umbrella Academy coolness, head HERE.

Gerard Way’s odd superhero family is back for another adventure.
Proving that even the America’s biggest celebrities are really big nerds at heart, My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way hit the comics scene last year with Umbrella Academy. This quirky little book was notable for being much better than you might expect from a “celebrity writer,” combining elements of Hellboy, superhero comics, and a healthy dose of Grant Morrison zaniness into one package. Perhaps the Morrison influence was a bit too obvious, but I’ve always believed it’s better to emulate the best if you’re going to emulate someone.

As some of you may have heard, we are thrilled to announce TWO new members in the Mindless Self Indulgence family. In addition to MSI’s bassist LynZ and her husband Gerard, MSI’s guitarist Steve and his partner Lucinda have announced that they are expecting a baby late in the spring of 2009! This will be the first child for both Steve and Lucinda, as well as LynZ and Gerard.
It is very important that you hear this from us first and believe nothing to the contrary: While we will ask some of our friends to fill in for LynZ – and at a later date, Steve – so that they can be with their new families, neither member is leaving Mindless Self Indulgence permanently.
No shows will be cancelled — in fact, we will be adding more throughout North America and beyond in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned for more news and information HERE, and check out the shows HERE as tickets are going fast for those shows which’ve been announced already.
‘Till then, if you wish to leave Steve and LynZ’s families congratulatory messages, do so HERE.
